BICENTENNIAL

The Memoirs of an 8 Year Old

Puerto Rican Immigrant

Carlos Jiménez Flores takes the reader on a journey that begins on the Fourth of July 1976 while American patriots were celebrating its bicentennial independence from England and ends on the Fourth of June 1977 when a group of Puerto Rican patriots in Chicago were fighting for the independence of Puerto Rico from the United States.

Carlos was 8 years old when his family decided to move to Chicago for a better economic opportunity. He struggles to assimilate as he battles a language barrier, a family torn apart, poverty, inner city violence, racism and more.

This peek at a year in the life of an immigrant child is a must-read. It is a raw account of an impactful experience.
