Caney Publishing

est. 2009

Carlos Jiménez Flores is the Founder, President and CEO. He began printing, binding and selling his poetry chatbooks in the late 1990s while working at a school's computer lab where he had access to the necessary equipment (computer, printer, laminator, binding machine). From 2002-2005, he worked for a book publisher where he learned the business side of the industry. In 2004, he decided to self-publish his first book, From the Other Side of the Tracks: A Collection of Poems from the Depths of Poverty, through First Books (later known as AuthorHouse), under the name Sol Ra C.

The name of the company, Caney Publishing, comes from the Taíno, who are the indigenous people of Borikén (known today as Puerto Rico). The Taíno lived in homes they called bohios. The cacique (chief) lived in a bigger home called a caney. When looking to name his publishing house, it was only fitting to name it after the Cacique's home.
